Asphalt Driveway Installation

Dirt Dogs Excavating are the Colorado front range driveway installation experts! We’ve got years of experience installing driveways in Elizabeth, Parker, Castle Rock and nearby areas. When we  install or overhaul a driveway we bring our extensive experience to the table and make sure the surrounding earth and landscaping is properly worked to handle drainage and water so it runs away from your driveway. This avoids ice build up in the winter and really helps it last longer.

The Initial Process
The proper construction of an asphalt driveway begins with the preliminary earthwork; removal of the old driveway material; excavation of the ground to the necessary levels; shaping the driveway and preparing the ground for drainage around the driveway.

The Driveway Base
Building the arena base is the next step in the construction process. Crushed rock of various sizes is distributed over the site, compacted and laser leveled. The material used is determined by soil conditions and the client’s riding specifications.

Even the best designed and constructed driveways don’t last forever. Multiple factors contribute to the degrading of a driveway. If the driveway is road base or crushed gravel it can get eroded by or poorly designed drainage, breakdown or use of poor construction materials, poor design, or poor construction in the original work. Asphalt driveways typically last much longer (15-20 years) but even they will wear out over time.

Steps for Installing an Asphalt Driveway

These are the major steps we use when we install an asphalt driveway:

  • Excavate the area and remove debris.
  • Grade and slope the surface for proper drainage.
  • Lay a sub-base of crushed gravel and compact it.
  • Apply a binder layer of larger aggregate asphalt.
  • Add the top layer of fine asphalt.
  • Compact the surface smoothly.

Asphalt driveway installation is best performed when the air and ground temperatures are between 50°F and 90°F (10°C and 32°C). Optimal conditions are usually during warm, dry weather, as lower temperatures can cause the asphalt to cool too quickly, preventing proper compaction and bonding. For optimal results, installation should be done in dry weather conditions.
